I walked out to the tee on the center dock, watching as the one hundred–forty–foot Benetti pulled in. I was glad that Kari had kept this spot for her, as she was so stunning. As I pointed out, Sanders’ Toolpusher looked more ungainly with her gray hull and white superstructure. But the dark green hull of Deb’s Emerald, as the Benetti was called, only served to accentuate her sleek hull lines and Matterhorn white superstructure.

The crew was obviously very experienced, coordinating well and making the huge job of docking the yacht look like child’s play. I glanced over at the next dock and saw an unhappy-looking Ronnie Sanders checking out the new arrival.

“Hey, Marlin! Come on aboard.” Max was on the side deck and had that same look he wore when I picked him up from the airport. The one that made you feel like him seeing you was the highlight of his day. I climbed the gangway that had just been put in place and took his outstretched hand when he met me at the landing. “Do you always greet incoming boats with a fly by?” Even his eyes were smiling as he said it.

“Only special arrivals, Max. And remind me to send you the video I took of this boat. The view from up there was great.”

“I bet. Hey, aren’t those Ronnie Sanders’ boats on the next dock?”

With all of Max’s connections, it didn’t surprise me that he might know Sanders. It also wasn’t a surprise that his welcoming face had disappeared, replaced with a frown. “Yes. You know the guy?”

He nodded. “Yeah, I know him.”

He wasn’t happy, and he also wasn’t more forthcoming. I wasn’t going to press him on the issue, so instead, I changed the subject. “Hey, these sure are much nicer digs than where you stayed last time you were here.”

“Let me give you a tour. I’ll be moving over to the Viking when it arrives tomorrow, since I’ll be spending most of my time on her. And the houseboat was really comfortable on the last trip, thanks for both putting up with me and putting me up as well. Hey, do you happen to know how long Ronnie will be here?”

With the way he almost spat as he said the guy’s name, I knew there was a back story to this, and it sounded like it wasn’t a good one. He almost scowled when I told him that he was going to be based here all summer. Before that, I hadn’t seen Max scowl.

As we toured the Benetti, Max returned to his normal relaxed mood. While he preferred fishing boats, his depth of knowledge of all boats was impressive. He was able to point out several unique features of the yacht that I otherwise would have missed. Stuart Lieberman was indeed lucky to have found Max. That, or very smart. I suspected it was a combination of the two.

I liked Lieberman’s taste in boats as well as fishing directors. The Benetti was elegant, but also comfortable at the same time.
